The Prince of Wales said he would travel the length of his future kingdom to hear Fanny Ronalds sing Arthur Sullivan's (of Gilbert and Sullivan) THE LOST CHORD. Fanny was Sullivan's close friend and sometimes mistress who often sang the song at social functions. Penned in 1877, it has since become a metaphor for that moment at which all things converge and transform from how it is to how it could be...when all the pieces fall into place. All hope is in it.
Seated one day at the organ, I was weary and ill at ease, And my fingers wandered idly Over the noisy keys. I know not what I was playing, It flooded the crimson twilight, It quieted pain and sorrow, It linked all perplexed meanings That one lost chord divine, Which came from the soul of the organ, And entered into mine. It may be that death's bright angel Will speak in that chord again, It may be that only in Heav'n I shall hear that grand Amen. |
